Nitriding
Nitriding is based on saturating the surface with nitrogen at a given temperature and the formation of a hard surface layer without further quenching. It is suitable for wear, abrasion and erosion components. A prerequisite is that a suitably chosen type of material that needs to be refined. The thickness of the hard layer is usually chosen from 0.1 mm to 0.6 mm.
Nitrides are performed in shaft furnaces under ammonia.
